Pressure washer water softener, why do you need it? Well unless you live in a very hard water area, you don't! Pressure washers, in the same way as

your kettle may suffer from a build-up of limescale mineral deposits on internal components such as hot water pressure washer boiler coils and high pressure hoses. The main part of this deposit is calcium carbonate and magnesium. Hard water contains Calcium particles and are more readily soluble in hot water than cold. The calcium may also combine with your Traffic Film Remover (TFR) to leave deposits on the inside of components too.

Since the very early days of hot water pressure washers, some machines have been fitted as standard with water softener systems. This is a dosing system that operates when the machine is used in hot mode as follows. The water softener is poured into a holding tank fitted to the machine, normally a couple of litre’s capacity, and a simple timer circuit drips the softener into the machines header tank, this then mixes in the water that is fed into the pump, and so protects the machine.

Some machines use a special type softener system that means only water softener purchased from the manufacturer can be used. These bottles use a RFID tag system that will register the serial number of the tag affixed under the label so that once the reservoir is empty, the tag is then re-written by the electronics to block that tag, and bottle from being refilled. These tags use a very common 13.56 mhz tag that can be read by a smart phone that is near field communication (NFR) enabled, but unless the password is known, cannot be rewritten. If you have a Samsung android phone you can hours of fun reading tags of old and new bottles,  if that’s your thing. A lot of these modern systems use multiple PCB boards that can be prone to failure, and will even tell you when they have!

There is hope though, It is a very simple process to convert these machines and any pressure washer that has not got a system fitted to a more standard set up, and given the bottles above are in the region of £9.99 + VAT per litre, it works out much more cost effective. The conversion kit consists of a dosing unit that is connected up internally in the control box of the machine, some PVC pipe to get the water softening liquid from the reservoir bottle, in this case if only one detergent tank is used the other spare can be used for water softener, just like in the old days! A PVC delivery pipe then takes the correctly dosed water softener directly to the header tank. Job done, and a nice and easy on the pocket solution.

Our water softener is available in 1 litre, 5 litre, 10 litre and 200 litre drums depending upon your requirements. 5 litre drums are £13.50 + VAT.

If you don’t want to use the water softener system, you can simply turn it off, and any decent service engineer worth his salt will carry out a 10 minute descale of the system when he services your machine annually or otherwise anyway. Or if you are happy to use the built in system then use that, it is after all your machine, and your money. But if you do need to use it, and want to reduce running costs then  it may be worth considering.

A lot of modern ‘eco’ machines use a really tall boiler coil to try to make them efficient in transferring the heat from the diesel fired flame tube to conduct the heat through the steel coil to heat the water. These modern style heater coils are by their ‘efficient’ nature made from extremely thin material and premature failure due to pin holes in these boilers are not uncommon, in fact its very common and we have changed lots. All of the pressure washers that we sell now do not use this type of system, and instead use boilers that look like they came from a battleship. These have better thermal transfer properties, and although they may take a few seconds more to get up to temperature tend to heat soak much better, and last 20 times longer, and don’t mind being descaled once a year.
