So your looking for a new machine? There is a huge range of machines to choose from, but which one is right for me? Well that depends on how and what it’s going to be used for.

First some of facts:

* Hot water cleans better than cold

* 1400rpm machine's last longer than 2800 rpm

* High pressure chemical cleans better than low pressure

* Cheap machines means exactly that - Cheap!

Choosing new cleaning equipment these days is far from simple, with technological advancement constantly pushing the boundary its can quickly become very confusing what machine would be best, so in this article we will talk a little about the different types of equipment that is available and hopefully make things a bit clearer for you. On the whole pressure washers are still doing what they did 20 years ago, pushing water out of the end of the lance!

Pressure washers come in both hot and cold machines. If you have just a couple of vans to wash on a Saturday morning then a cold water machine with a decent TFR (Traffic Film Remover) will do the job just great. A 2800 RPM high speed machine or small domestic machine will be ok for a short period of time but pretty soon will become worn out as it simply not up to the job. The reason high speed machines exsist is to get a higher flow rate of water as cheaply as possible. As we are an industrial supplier we dont sell high speed machines, all ours are low revving 1400 RPM motors designed for long life. Broken 2800 RPM machines mis-sold by internet sellers and 'dealers' that are economical with the truth keep our service department very busy though.

A good industrial mobile cold water is designed for the job, and although more expensive to buy in the offset will last far longer and be less problematic. You will generally get a higher flow rate of water to help with cleaning, the higher the flow rate, the better and quicker the clean.

For oil/grease or more stubborn dirt and grime then you are going to need a hot water machine. These are available in mobile or static cabinets and most will have diesel fired boilers, high pressure chemical, onboard fuel and chemical tanks, heavy duty pump and motor with brass pump head and an automatic shut down system.

Some machines are available with other electronic systems such as leak detection systems etc, great but we prefer to ensure our customers don’t have leaky machines in the first place. Its a fact that machines that have lots of pretty flasing lights will have plenty of issues after a couple of years or so. The best machines have simple controls and big clunky switches such as the MAC AVANT or Kranzle 715. Do you really need a mobile machine? If you have a mobile machine that sits in the same place, why not upgrade to a static? Static pressure washer tend to give much more reliable operation and everything is locked away inside the cabinet to stop excessive use of chemical and fuel etc. We have supplied plenty of static machines over the years and the results are very impresive. They can alo be customised to suit the cleaning task perfectly.

A note about Chinese imports - whilst these machines appear to offer outstanding value for money, they are still a long way behind in terms of quality and often quote specifications that are over engineered and directly affect the lifetime of the machine. If you just have a small project to complete then buy one and throw it away when you’re done (not a very eco friendly solution), but if you’re looking to purchase something that you’re going to keep then look for something more substantial, and more importantly you can get spares for.

Use an RCD - goes without saying really! Water and electricity do not mix so protect yourself and your employees by using one. The electricity at work act requires you to protect! Ideally you should have one that is positioned on the end of the mains lead of the equipment you are using for maximum protection.

Whats in your TFR?

And finally a word about TFR. Traffic film remover plays an important role in any cleaning operation and the choice of TFR is, we believe, just as important. Why you may ask? As you will no doubt be aware there is a huge choice of chemicals to choose from various manufacturers and retailers and the difference in cost is quite varied too.

However using cheap TFR will do three things. 1st it will give an apparently amazing clean, 2nd it will rot your windscreen rubbers and third it will degrade and eventually flatten paintwork. Go and run you hand over some bodywork on your vehicle and take look at what you wipe off, if your hands turns the same colour as your truck you may want to think about changing your TFR.

A good quality TFR such as our 'ULTRAFLEET' will clean without damaging paintwork and contains a rinse aid to leave a streak free shine.
Incidentally, chassis and plant TFR's are by their nature cheaper to produce and more suited for the job at which they are labelled for cleaning off dirty chassis for pre mot inspections etc or perhaps cleaning heavy plant. Ideal for plant not so good on your new fleet of Scania's!
